Abstract
Where is the "House of the Future" and why are embedded systems so lonely? In an effort to answer these questions, Stupid Fun Club is exploring social appliances (appliance to human and appliance to appliance). Enabling technologies are: embedded controllers, cheap sensors, powerful networking, practical speech recognition and quality text to speech. Areas to be discussed: Real-time data acquisition, debugging complex systems, Zigbee appliance communication standard and clear text APIs. Also covered will be appliance companionship, personalities, learning, gossiping and lying. Developer development will be explored: reading material for the engineer, the fun of failing, Google Lunar Prize, Pleo the dinosaur, blinky lights, pretty faces, Zeno the robot kid, Gadgetoff, Hollywood, Brian Eno, Tom Waits, "what are the kids doing?", and hanging out in Oakland with Colt 45 and MoonBot.
