Abstract
Mobile computers have been going through unprecedented advancements in the recent years, marked by an impressive annual volume of >100MU in 2007, which is expected to double in another 4 years. The advent of high-performance notebook computers coupled with the ubiquitous high-speed wireless Internet connectivity is having a profound effect on our daily lives. One of the rapidly proliferating usages among consumers is the creation and consumption of high-quality video content. The mobile computer is challenged to provide superior visual experience to keep pace with the consumer electronics devices, and at the same time, offer prolonged battery life to allow truly un-tethered mobile usage. Currently, the display subsystem of a typical notebook consumes as much as half of the overall system average power. Laptop displays also exhibit blurred video playback, due to the “sample and hold” driving architecture of the LCD and slow response times of the liquid crystals. Intel has developed a suite of advanced video processing algorithms and system-level display power-quality optimization technologies. Integrated in the graphics controller chipsets, these technologies result in superior video quality and reduced display power consumption for longer battery life, thereby significantly enhancing the visual experience for the users of the next-generation mobile computers.
