The Emergence of Physical Synthesis as a Mainstream Design Technology

Abstract

Physical Synthesis generates an efficient transistor level circuit layout from SPICE netlist through a process of placement, routing and compaction controlled by the designer's architecture specification and process design rules. This talk presents the role of Physical Synthesis in the context of state-of-the-art digital circuit design flows. We also describe opportunities for coupling circuit optimization operations with the physical design process. Specific applications presented include standard cell libraries, I/O pad macros, custom data paths and memory peripheral circuits.
