Convergence in Multistage Design Flows

Abstract

Several design methodologies can be represented by multi-stage flows, with multiple feedback loops between the stages. Convergence in such flows is often slow and unreliable. In this talk, we abstract complex flows into a simple two-stage flow, with a "front-end", "back-end" and a feedback loop. We analyze the common obstacles to convergence in such a loop, with several examples taken from a typical chip design flow. The analysis leads to general guidelines which can be applied to architect better CAD tools.
