The problem is composition of components, and decomposition of systems. The solution is models of computation, hierarchical heterogeneity, software frameworks, and visual representations of complex designs. The concept of models of computation is barely starting to catch on, but we expect it will be part of the engineering vernacular before long. The approach will stop short of nothing less than changing the way we think about systems, and the way that we construct software for systems that engage the physical world. The terminology will change as the ideas evolve. And evolve they will. Our work has barely begun.
