Platform to Protect America's Power Grid

March 29, 2017

Resilience of the nation's energy infrastructure is "of national importance," says FORCES researcher Gabor Karsai, a professor at Vanderbilt University and associate director of the Institute for Software Integrated Systems. Along with colleagues from Washington State University and North Carolina State University, Dr. Karsai is addressing this challenge through the development of a component-based decentralized open-source software platform that provides an infrastructure for the smart grid and similar systems.

Known as Resilient Information Architecture Platform for Decentralized Smart Systems (RIAPS), the technology includes intelligent distribution services and takes advantage of the emerging Fog Computing paradigm which provides an additional computational layer that enables new capabilities in real-time, data-driven applications.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy OPEN 2015 program, which aims to advance transformational breakthroughs in energy technologies, Karsai and his colleagues will present their research at the upcoming 8th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems (ICCPS) and the 20th IEEE International Symposium on Real-Time Computing (ISORC) later this year.
