Booting up Linux, errors: Soft lock on CUP#0

Could not debug this problem, proceed to:

Downloaded ISO kubuntu-7.04.1-desktop-i386.iso.

Tested the ISO with md5 sum (hash) with winMD5Sum.

used InfraRecorder to copy the Kubuntu image file onto a CD.

Countered another problem: when Kubuntu is installed and

when trying to boot, it will say: GRUB load, and simply hangs.

Used source:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=409345 for installation of version 7.04 on Optiplex 320.

The solution is to install lilo in place of GRUB. (this problem is specific to Optiplex 320.)

After installation, follow instruction in NIS and Unix Infrastructure at EECS/Berkeley to configure the machine in order to have others in EECS domain and robotics group login to your machine.

elab crash on 8/14

elab crashed on the night of 8/14.

none of the P1000 boxes connected to elab seem to be affected.

The motherboard seems to be broken. chip: smsc sch5514D-NS is burning hot. Initially the fan seems to be working correctly.

A diagnosis CD was made and was tried to boot the machine. However it didn't work.

Called Dell Technical Support. This time even the fan is not working, the power LED is a faint yellow, the motherboard is deemed to be broken. Also the fan did not come on this time, and so the power supply is also deemed to be broken.
