Disk format and OS
Bean has a single, 3GB, partition formatted in NTFS (NT
file system). NTFS is better than FAT16 because:
- It is recoverable
- It is scalable and has less overhead (for large volumes)
- It has 256-character file names and permissions
NTFS is worse than FAT16 because:
Bean is a "single-boot" machine, and only has NT
installed on it. It does not have Windows 95 installed
on it. This is a good idea because:
- It saves setting up and messing about with the quirks of two
operating systems
- It saves messing about with two disk partitions, at least
one of which would have to be in FAT16
- I have friends who write software for Microsoft who say this
is a Good Thing
- Sooner or later, Windows will die
It is a bad idea because:
- Some games don't too work on Windows NT
- I can't test my software under Windows 95
